Coaching gets boost in Telangana

3K coaching centres register with TS since June ’15

Hyderabad: The change in syllabus effected by the Telangana State Public Service Commission for Groups and other recruitment exams has fuelled coaching industry in major cities in the state.

With no major recruitments in undivided AP during the last six years, the coaching industry had plunged into crisis which now got a boost with fresh notifications issued by the TSPSC.

All the coaching obtained earlier by students by spending thousands of rupees has gone waste with major changes made in syllabus after the formation of Telangana State forcing them to seek coaching afresh.

For instance, Group-I, II aspirants have been taking coaching since 2008 in short-term and long-term batches with an aim of cracking the exams. However, no notifications were issued since 2009 due to political turmoil over the Telangana issue.

While each students spent Rs 60,000 for short-term coaching, it was up to Rs 1.50 lakh for long-term batches. These batches were continued till February 2014, when Telangana Bill was passed in Parliament.

However, the enrollments came down from August 2013 when then UPA government decided to bifurcate AP as there was uncertainty over issuing job notifications till the bifurcation process was completed.

The coaching centres, which numbered nearly 2,000 in the GHMC limits till 2013, came down to 500 by June 2014, with many downing shutters due to no takers.

Even the formation of TS in June 2014 failed to revive the coaching centres as the government kept the issue pending for one year.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s statement at Parade Grounds, Secunderabad, on the first anniversary of Telangana’s formation on June 2, 2015, about filling 50,000 posts this year gave a fresh lease of life to many coaching centres in the city. Most coaching centres are located in in Ashoknagar, Chikkadpally, Dilsukhnagar and Ameerpet.

The government initiated the exercise to make registration mandatory for coaching centres, and since June over 3,000 centres have registered within the GHMC limits alone, reflecting the huge demand for coaching.

“Though job notifications are meant for government job aspirants, they started creating indirect employment for thousands in the form of coaching centres. Each coaching centre will hire at least 20 teaching staff in various subjects. There will be another 20 non-teaching staff. In Ashok Nagar, Chikkadpally, Dilsukhnagar and Ameerpet alone, nearly 500 centres came up during the last three months,” said B. Chandrasekhar, a faculty member at a coaching centre.

Interestingly, most of the centres are owned by faculty members themselves, with five or six of them coming together and setting up centres of their own in partnership. They are making a quick buck as they conduct short-term coaching ranging from two to three months by collecting over Rs 50,000.
