Farmer leader gives slip to cops

Ayyakannu told DC over phone that their proposed agitation against Mr Vaithilingam would be held despite severe restrictions from police
Tiruchy: Tension prevailed for the second day today at Annamalai Nagar area in the city, when some policemen detained P. Ayyakannu, state president of the Desiya Thenindiya Nathigal Inaippu Vivasayeegal Sangam and his supporters at his house.
Police said that the farmers’ representatives were holding a meeting in the suburb of Manachanallur on Sunday evening, preparing for the agitational programme to lay siege to the house of State Agriculture Minister Vaithilingam, condemning his remarks that there was no drought anywhere in Tamil Nadu. On information, a police party went to the spot and prevented further proceedings of the meeting, forcibly removing Mr Ayyakannu and a few of his supporters to the residence of the farmer leader in the city. They detained them there under house arrest. Later this evening, Mr Ayyakannu and his supporters gave a slip to the police and left for an unknown destination.
Mr Ayyakannu told DC over phone that their proposed agitation against Mr Vaithilingam would be held despite severe restrictions from police. Meanwhile, a police team is searching for Mr Ayyakannu and others, police sources said.
