University of Hyderabad teachers irked by security search

Officials raided prof’s house after neighbours’ complaint

Hyderabad: An incident by security officials conducting an investigation in the house of Dr Gracious Temsen, a woman professor from the Northeast, has infuriated many faculty members of the University of Hyderabad.

The incident occurred on May 31 at about 7.30 am, when security officials of the university received a complaint from a neighbour of Dr Temsen regarding disturbance caused by the noise emanating from her house and also due to many people staying, entering and leaving the house.

A security official said that the team had climbed the terrace of a nearby building and clicked pictures of the compound of Dr Temsen’s house which had many liquor bottles. “We also saw a girl leaving the house,” the official said.

Security officials showed the pictures to the university administration and told them about the complaint by the neighbour. After getting a go-ahead they went to Dr Temsen’s house and knocked on the door.

“When it was opened we found a man who identified himself as Dr Temsen’s brother staying there along with seven to eight boys and girls. Some of the girls were university students. We asked them for their identity cards but none could provide any. None of them had any pass issued by the university to enter the campus,” the officer said.

He said the girl who had been spotted earlier was not to be seen in the house. “Later we found that she had hidden under a cot. We clicked pictures of her under the cot. We have the right to investigate if any resident causes inconvenience to other residents,” he said.

The University of Hyderabad Teachers Association conducted a general body meeting and demanded that the university administration should publicly apologise to Dr Temsen for intruding into her home, clicking photographs and blatantly violating privacy.

They alleged that the raid was unofficial as no search order was provided to the residents. They demanded that deputy registrar, security, Challa Venkateshwar, be given a show cause notice and that a committee be formed with a professor from the Northeast to look into the matter.

UHTA president Dr K. Lakshmi Narayana, said their repeated attempts to resolve the issue were rebuffed by the university administration.
