NABARD push for old paddy varieties

PUDUKKOTTAI: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development NABARD and Rose-Tdh, an NGO here jointly organized a seminar on protection and Popularization of traditional varieties of paddy and minor millets, at Munasandai near Pudukkottai on Friday.
Chandrasekaran, joint director (Agriculture) inaugurated the seminar. S. Somasundaram, district development manager, NABARD, said in his presidential address that it has been jointly organizing such seminars during the last six years for protecting and popularizing 17 traditional varieties of paddy, which have good medicinal value. This can improve the standard of living of poor farmers and can also protect the environment, he added.
Ko. Siddhar, naturopathy doctor from Thanjavur urged that, “we have to cultivate the traditional varieties that feed humans, cattle and the soil, can grow in drought conditions with less water, and can resist pest attacks.”
The MD of Rose-Tdh Adappan welcomed the gathering, while Velayudam, an organic farmer from Munasandai gave the vote of thanks.
According to Adappan, more than 500 farmers, members of farmers’ clubs, headmasters of nearby schools, president of local panchayats, women and school children participated. An exhibition on traditional seeds, and traditional cultivation practices was also organised to benefit farmers.
