NGT vacates stay on 400 KV transmission lines

The Tantransco will compensate for any crop less if it is nominal
Chennai: The southern bench of National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday vacated the interim stay and permitted Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (Tantransco) to carry on with the string work and installation of 400 KV lines between Kalivanthapattu substation to Ottiyambakkam substation at Kelambakkam after it gave an undertaking that there won’t be any damage to the ecosystem.
The green bench closed the case filed by M/s Tractors and Farm Equipment Ltd (Tafe), which runs a not-for-profit adaptive research and agricultural extension centre called “J” Farm spread across 200 acres. As per the complainant, the Tantransco power line works would result in felling of nearly 1,200 trees, including Agathi, Banana, coconut, mango and neem trees in its centre.
However, Tantransco counsel and special government pleader Mr Abdul Saleem gave an undertaking that no tree would be cut during the process and if any three or vegetation is damaged it would be replanted.
It can be learnt that Tantransco has already installed two High Tension (HT) towers on the premises of the centre and was preparing to commence the stringing work as part of establishment of 400/230-110 KV sub-station at Sholinganallur. Mr Saleem told DC that the petitioner Tafe has accepted Rs 2 lakh compensation at the time of installation of HT towers and now has demanded Rs 98 lakh ‘unreasonably’.
The Tantransco will compensate for any crop less if it is nominal. “The case was filed suppressing the actual facts. The court has heard us and closed the case before permitting Tantransco to carry on with the work,” he said.
