IVF centre’s patient dies in Hyderabad

Family of teacher accuses Srushti IVF centre of negligence

Hyderabad: A school teacher, who approached a test tube baby centre, succumbed while undergoing treatment for reaction to anaesthesia during hysteroscopy. Family members alleged that negligence of the doctors had caused the reaction, which resulted in her death.

The woman had gone to the Srushti IVF Centre at Secunderabad for the first time on August 21. The incident occurred during her third consultation on August 26.

The deceased, Uma Maheshwari, 40, and her husband L. Shankar Lingam are residents of Ibrahimpatnam. Uma Maheshwari was as a primary school teacher at Mehdipatnam, while Mr Lingam is a practising advocate at the Nampally court.

Since they had no children, the couple approached the Srushti IVF Centre for a child through IVF method. After the first consultation on August 21, she returned on August 24. After investigations, doctors decided to start the treatment from August 26.

On Wednesday, she was taken to the operation theatre for hysteroscopy. The procedure allows the doctor to examine the insides of the uterus and is done using a hysteroscope, a thin, lighted tube. Family members allege that Uma Maheshwari had no other complications and she died due to a reaction to the injection given to her and attributed it to the negligence of the doctor.

“Before the surgery, they gave her anaesthesia after which she developed complications. They were frightened and told us to shift her to Apollo Hospital. We took her there for treatment. As they did not respond properly, we shifted her to Kamineni Hospital at LB Nagar. They did not even care about what happened to us after we left,” said Mr Lingam.

Srushti IVF Centre denied the allegations saying that there was no negligence. Doctors monitored her situation for two to three hours as she recovered. “But when her condition worsened, we rushed her to Apollo. Two doctors accompanied her,” a doctor said.

“When she developed complications, we asked her husband and he said that she had appendicitis surgery nearly two years ago and the same complications had happened at that time also. When her saturation levels fell low for the second time, we shifted her to Apollo Hospital, but the family later shifted her to Kamineni Hospital at LB Nagar,” said Dr Namrata, chairman of Srushti.

Police booked a case under Sections 336 and 304(a) of the IPC.
