Sheena Bora murder: Did the system too fail her in death?

When Sheena’s charred body was found, Raigad police ignored all evident signs of mischief

Mumbai: Why did the Raigad police not order an accidental death report and file an FIR when Sheena Bora’s charred body was found near the Pen-Khopoli road in Raigad forest in May 2012?

Instead they ignored all evident signs of mischief – a charred body in a burnt suitcase? – and filed just a diary entry, taking note of the incident and the recovery of the body.

The case could have been cracked sooner if an FIR had been registered, police sources said.

Since things appear clearer in hindsight, director general Sanjeev S Dayal has now ordered an inquiry into this lapse, the Mumbai Mirror reported.

A copy of the station diary entry on May 23, 2012 states traces of partially burnt skin and hair from the body were sent to Mumbai for forensic testing. A tabloid reported the local police along with deputy superintendent Pradeep Chavan visited the spot and informed the incident to then SP (Raigad) R D Shinde. Shinde is now posted in Mumbai as an additional commissioner.

On the other hand, an accidental death report would have ensured that the case would be followed through – the body identified and all attempts made to trace the killer.

Meanwhile JJ Hospital authorities have said they received bone and hair sample from the Raigad police in 2012 but no one bothered to come and pick up the results. The hospital authorities, who do not have the authority to destroy samples sent for age and sex determination, can only remind the police every three months to collect results. In this case, however, the results were inconclusive as the bones sent were in little pieces and had been completely charred.

It is only this week that sleuths landed up at the hospital asking for the results. They had first gone to the forensic lab in Kalina but that lab didn’t have the samples.

Doctors told the tabloid that it would be difficult to ascertain any pregnancy as sample of the uterus, fallopian and cervix is required for that.
