Priest climbs temple, seeks state salary

All 3,000 archakas and 3,000 staff at 670-odd notified temples are on strike for three days

Hyderabad: An archaka climbed the five-storey gopuram at the Keesaragutta temple, demanding that the government pay salaries to priests and temple staff on par with other state employees.

Mr Venkatesh, 34, shouted slogans from atop the tower of the Ramalingeshwara Swamy temple demanding implementation of the archakas’ demands. After much cajoling by fellow archakas, he got down safely.

All 3,000 archakas and 3,000 staff at 670-odd notified temples are on strike for three days. Telangana Temple Archakas and Employees JAC convener Bhanumurthy said the strike would continue till government agreed to implement their demands including payment of salaries on par with state employees through the treasury.
