German bank fund to boost water transport in Greater Kochi

78 high-quality and safe modern vessels

Kochi: The demand for modernising the water transport sector in Greater Kochi area has gained momentum with the Fort Kochi boat mishap on Wednesday. The proposed mega water transport development project worth Rs 740 crore, funded by the German bank KFW, is expected to greatly improve the infrastructure.

The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), the nodal agency for the project, will form a special purpose vehicle to undertake the project, including procurement of 78 high-quality and safe modern vessels, construction of boat jetties, civil infrastructure works and development of roads in neighbouring islands.

The scientifically-designed vessels will be procured at a cost of Rs 195 crore through international bidding. According to KMRL authorities, the project will dynamically improve the water transport scenario in Greater Kochi. KMRL managing director Elias George told DC that modernisation of the fleet of vessels was crucial to avoid such mishaps.

“The proposal for the KFW- funded water transport development project should be approved at the earliest. Introduction of modern and high-quality vessels along with strict enforcement of rules and regulations can improve the safety and quality of water transport sector. Mishaps involving archaic and unfit boats can be avoided once scientifically-designed modern vessels are introduced,” said the KMRL chief.

The state Planning Board has already approved the project’s DPR and after the finance department’s scrutiny, the cabinet will approve it in three to four weeks. After the Union government’s approval, the KfW director board will sanction the loan amount.
