Doggie delights served on a plate

Pet-friendly restaurants in the city have special menus for dogs and cats
Imagine going to a restaurant with your pet. Then picture him sitting next to you lapping up a bowl of milk or soup himself. What if we tell you this is actually possible these days? Yes, several restaurants and cafes in Chennai have not only opened their doors to pets, but have special menu cards for them as well! Be it freshly toasted bread, different egg preparations or a delicious chicken broth, your dogs, cats, and even birds can now accompany you for a meal!
Crimson Chakra located in Gandhi Nagar, was one of the first few places to go pet-friendly. But the owner, Nikhil Moturi’s love for pets didn’t stop there — he went on to compile a simple yet delicious menu for his four-legged customers. “I’m a huge pet lover and own four dogs myself. I know what they like eating, and decided to introduce this at our restaurant as well,” he says. The outdoor seating area has enough space for you and your pet to bond over a meal. “We have a customer who comes to us along with his pet Labrador Retriever. Without fail, every time he orders a chicken lasagna with extra minced meat!” he laughs.
Namratha Joseph, who runs, the Cuckoo Club Diner in Chetpet, recently introduced a pet menu in the restaurant for its first anniversary. “I used to live in Switzerland for a while and could take my pets everywhere I went, even inside restaurants. We don’t have many facilities like that in Chennai, so I thought of making my diner a pet-friendly one,” she says adding, “All the meat is cooked to the right temperature, not seasoned with anything harmful for dogs, and served in special little bowls we have.”
If you want to head towards East Coast Road, then Hotel for Dogs is the ideal place to chill with your pet. Their in-house café serves a variety of dishes for humans as well as their pets. “We use fresh ingredients in all the dishes we serve, like chicken, sweet potatoes, carrots and more. Even the sausages and steaks are fresh and healthy,” says its founder Shravan Krishna.
The idea behind setting up a café was that people and pets get a chance to socialise over a yummy meal! “An all-time favourite is the chicken rice that is a mixture of cooked rice, chunks of chicken and stock. However, we’re also planning to introduce make-your-meals for owners who wish to give their pets a custom made meal,” he says.
If you’ve ever spotted a black Labrador at one of these pet-friendly restaurants, he’s probably Vinita Nayar’s ‘baby’, Hotdog. “We (Hotdog and she) love exploring new places to eat. Hottie even has a fixed menu wherever he goes. For example, while he enjoys bread toast and omelette in one place, he likes a cheese and chicken dish in another,” says Vinita. This is the perfect way to pamper your pooch isn’t it!
