Hyderabad: The Telangana government may write to the Centre against scrapping of the no detention policy under the Right to Education Act (RTE).
The state government feels that the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system must be strengthened and implemented instead.
It may be recalled that the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) had recently proposed to scrap the no detention policy.
All district and state level officials of the School Education Department of Telangana met on Tuesday to discuss the formulation of the New Education Policy.
Officials said the no detention policy was discussed at length during the meet and almost all the district and mandal level officials were against scrapping the policy.
They felt that scrapping the system would lead to an increase in dropouts and development of an inferiority complex among young children.
“Many also felt that scrapping the policy would mean infringement of a child’s rights and we can’t allow that. We should think of it from a rural perspective too and not just from the urban point of view,” TS School Education Commissioner T. Chiranjeevulu said.
Many children in rural areas work and study simultaneously and detaining them in a class would result in their dropping out of school, more so in the case of girls.
As a matter of fact, these were the same arguments put forth when the no detention policy was introduced as part of the RTE. The government machinery also feels the move will propel the private school mafia and put more stress on students.
