Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa unveils health check-up scheme

The government has allocated Rs 500 crore for the enhanced health diagnostic and care facilities it plans to provide
Chennai: To make health care more accessible to a larger population, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa announced 22 schemes on Tuesday. Making a statement in the Assembly, she unveiled three schemes - the Amma Master Health Check-Up, the Amma Women Special Master Health Check and the Amma Arogya Scheme. The government has allocated Rs 500 crore for the enhanced health diagnostic and care facilities it plans to provide.
Stating that private hospitals charge exorbitant fees — anywhere between Rs 5,000 and Rs 12,000 for a master check-up – thus depriving common people the opportunity to make periodic checks of their health, she said all three Amma schemes will help the public to avail quality health checks at a very minimal price.
The Amma Woman Master Health Check-up will include procedures like pap smear, digital mammogram and ECG, BP, calcium deficiency tests, etc.
Emphasising that the Government general hospital in Chennai will soon launch the master health check-up schemes, she pointed out that the Amma Arogya Scheme will benefit those diagnosed with symptoms of ailments through this scheme and secondary level tests like ECG, Echo and blood sugar will be taken free of cost in all 385 upgraded PHCs. Unveiling the Amma Magapperu Sanjeevi, a maternity care scheme, she said 11 types of Siddha medicines would be provided to the beneficiaries to ensure that infants born in TN are healthy.
Pointing out that the new schemes will push the state health indices to help Tamil Nadu retain number one position, she said 10 new PHCs will be set up at a cost of Rs 6 crore and another 10 PHCs will be upgraded into 30 bedded hospitals at a cost of Rs 12 crore. Battery operated cars to help passengers at Government Omandurar superspecialty hospital, high-end surgical equipment, cancer diagnostic equipment and strengthening of pediatric wards with neonatal intensive care units will be set up in Tambaram, Tiruttani, Gudiyattam, Rajapalayam and Viru-dachalam hospitals at a cost of Rs 3.25 crore, she said.
