KOCHI: Over 8,000 seats have fallen vacant in colleges under MG University in the under-graduate course after the admission process for this year closed on Monday after the final spot allotment.
This gives a strong indication that the fate of mushrooming self-financing (SF) engineering colleges, where thousands of seats are falling vacant in recent years, is also visiting the mushrooming SF arts and science college. These vacancies are being mainly reported from SF arts and science colleges.
While a total of 5,932 vac-ancies have been reported in the university quota of SF colleges alone, the number stands at 2,260 in the management quota of these colleges.
The total number of seats that have fallen vacant in government colleges stands at 161 while in the university and management quotas of aided colleges it is 21, according to officials of the university.
“Most of the seats were added for BCom this year in the self-financing colleges and since the course is now in demand, they were able to fill many seats. Otherwise the figure would have been much higher. Interestingly this year itself, a few SF colleges could not attract students to even BCom seats,” said a university official.
The total number of university quota seats under the MG University comes to 29,584. Of this, 12,631 seats belong to aided colleges, 1,127 seats belong to government colleges and 15,826 seats belong to SF colleges.
The total number of management quota seats under the varsity comes to 19,208 while the community quota seats number 2,129. The total UG seats under the varsity come to 50,921.
Approximately a total of 3,000 UG seats were added this year in different courses, a vast majority in SF colleges.
