Kerala hops on to 4G bandwagon

The 4G data plans will be available at a price equal to that of 3G plans

Kochi: Now, 4G telecom services have reached Kerala with Bharti Airtel launching its high speed wireless broadband services in Kochi on Tuesday.

The services, which essentially offer buffer-free streaming, clear video and voice, will be available in Kozhikode from Wednesday while it will be launched in Thiruvananthapuram “shortly”, George Mathen, hub CEO, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, said. “We also have a roll out plan for the entire state,” he said.

“The share of smart phones in Kerala is higher compare with the other states and we expect faster adoption of 4G services here,” Mr Mathen said. “You need three preconditions to avail the 4G services: a 4G-enabled device, a 4G connection and a package,” he added.

The company has also launched a mobile wi-fi instrument which will help those whose mobile devices are not 4G compatible to avail the services. “As many as 10 devices can be latched on to the equipment,” he said. The 4G data plans will be available at a price equal to that of 3G plans.

Mr Mathen said data business grows faster across the nation, and for Airtel, it grew 70 per cent last year while the voice managed to touch double digits though on a larger base. Data at present makes only 17 per cent of the total business for the company.
