Delhi govt like 'daughter-in-law' in joint family with special duties: Sumitra Mahajan

Delhi has special circumstances where, I accept, one has to suffer at times, says Mahajan

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Tuesday said the relationship between the Centre and the Delhi government was similar to that of a "daughter-in-law" in a "joint family" where it has to bear a "special responsibility" and "suffer at times".

"You (MLAs) have bigger responsibilities about state and the Centre relationship, we say they are federal states and each of them has its own rights but at times I feel that all other assemblies are like daughter-in-laws staying far off their in-laws and hence are independent," she said while addressing a two-day orientation programme for MLAs in the Delhi Assembly here.

"Delhi has special circumstances where, I accept, one has to suffer at times, it's like a joint family where everyone stays together and then comes the special responsibility on the daughter-in-law (the Delhi government) but we have to manage it all understanding our responsibility towards the people of Delhi," she said.

"At times, blaming others is not the solution. How should we do our work successfully, how much should we do and we should talk only that much," she added.

The Delhi government is embroiled in a turf war with Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung.
