Bengaluru civic polls: BJP registers victory, Modi hails hattrick of wins

This is a win for politics of development and good governance, says PM

Bengaluru: The BJP added yet another feather to its cap and emerged victorious in 101 seats in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) polls. The Congress achieved victory in 75 seats. The JD (S) bagged 14 seats while the others won in eight seats.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated the people of Bengaluru saying BJP completed a hattrick of victories, after Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. He thanked Karnataka BJP leaders and workers for good results in the BBMP polls. Modi took to twitter to convey his wishes.

Congress Party on Tuesday accepted defeat saying people have not accepted their proposals despite the BJP's misrule.

"Whatever we thought that we will develop Bengaluru and will improve it has not been accepted by the people of Bengaluru," said Karnataka Congress president G. Parmeshwar.

"After five-year of misrule of the BJP, people of the city have pardoned them and voted for them and we have accepted that mandate," he added.

Parmeshwar, however, said that it would not be possible at this point of time to disclose the reasons for the Congress' dismal show.

"It's very difficult to conclude that what went wrong at this point of time," he said.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a meeting with five senior ministers and some senior Congress leaders to understand what went wrong.

The election to 198 wards of BBMP was held after a prolonged court battle, as Siddaramaiah led government sought to defer it on grounds of trifurcating the civic body. A total of 1,121 candidates were in the fray. One candidate from BJP has already been elected unopposed. Besides Corporators, the 254-member BBMP Council includes 56 other members from Bengaluru with voting rights-- 28 MLAs, 15 MLCs, five Lok Sabha and eight Rajya Sabha members.

During the 2010 BBMP polls, BJP had won in 111 wards; Congress in 65 wards, JD(S) in 15 and others 17.
