Engage people directly, central panel urges CPM Kerala unit

The committee asked the party unit to launch a strong campaign against the BJP in the state

KOCHI: The CPM Central Committee meeting which concluded in New Delhi on Sunday instructed the Kerala unit of the party to devise methods to establish direct contacts with people instead of depending upon religious-caste organizations.

The central committee also stressed the importance of keeping unity in the state unit, sources familiar with the discussions said.

The central leadership cautioned the state leadership on getting close to religious and caste organisations while discussing the growth of BJP in the state. The committee asked the party unit to launch a strong campaign against the BJP in the state.

The central committee gave the call to have direct contacts with the masses amidst reports that the state leadership of the party was making efforts to establish some strategic tie-up with Kanthapuram faction of the Muslim community.

Party general secretary Sitaram Yechury had reported the discussions held by the politburo on organisational issues in the Kerala unit of the party.

The central committee also discussed the reports prepared by the leadership for the consideration of the special plenum scheduled to be held in Kolkata.

The reports were submitted for the consideration of the politburo as the central committee had failed to reach a decision on the content of the reports.
