Venkaiah Naidu urges hike in municipal taxes

Mr Naidu said the list of 100 smart cities would be released by September 1
Hyderabad: Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said that cities could be developed by increasing municipal taxes. Mr Naidu, the Union minister for urban development, said that cities generate almost 50 per cent of total revenues in the country.
If the revenues were increased further, many more urban areas could be developed. He said the country's economic growth was linked to the development of cities.
He was addressing a national conference on smart technologies here on Saturday. Mr Naidu said the list of 100 smart cities would be released by September 1.
The list is almost ready but initially only 20 cities would be taken up on priority, he said. These 20 cities will be selected on certain parameters which have already been communicated to the 100 cities and the other aspirants.
Elsewhere, Mr Naidu and Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan announced that a testing laboratory for the Bureau of Indian Standards would be set up in the city soon.
They were inaugurating a building for the Bureau of Indian Standards at Moula Ali in the city.
