Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Friday flagged off 135 new Gypsy vehicles purchased to enhance police patrol narrow city roads. The new Maruti vehicles were purchased at a cost of Rs 8.55 crore. They are equipped with modern electronic display boards and high-end communication devices. With the addition of the new vehicles, Chennai city police have 763 surveillance vehicles, including 225 sports utility vehicles, 135 multi utility vehicles and 403 two wheelers.
The government is also taking up constructions of new police stations and police quarters to improve the security infrastructure, a press release said.
Chief secretary K. Gnanadesikan, home secretary Apoorva Varma, DGP Ashok Kumar and Chennai police commissioner S. George were among those present on the occasion, the release added.
In a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had recently demanded Rs 10,000 crore from the Centre for the modernisation of Tamil Nadu police.
The narrow built gypsies will help the police to reach the interior streets and lanes. These vehicles equipped with high speed acceleration and high turning radii can minimise the travelling time of police in reaching the crime spots, said R. Kumar, a mechanic specialising in high-end cars and super bikes. The gypsy and the jeep variants had always been favorite vehicles for uniformed staff for low maintenance and durability, he added.
