BJP ahead in Rajasthan civic polls, loses in Vasundhara Raje belt

Raje was left with some bitter taste as the party lost badly in her hometown Dholpur

Jaipur: Despite a thumping victory in municipal elections, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje was left with some bitter taste as the party lost badly in her hometown Dholpur as well as in the constituencies represented by her and her MP son Dushyant Singh.

The party lost the Jhalawar municipal council and Jhalrapatan municipality — both in Raje’s assembly constituency Jhalrapatan —after a gap of more than 15 years.

Ms Raje is MLA from Jhalrapatan. What is more embarrassing for the CM is that her son Dushyant Singh was in charge of Jhalawar. Although, the BJP attempting to attribute the loss to a rebel candidate joining the Congress.

However, there may not be easily available excuses for the losses in Baran municipal council and Anta municipality in Baran district both of which are part of Dushyant Singh’s Lok Sabha constituencies Jhalawar-Baran constituency and Dholpur municipal council.

Anyway, in an election that was seen as a prestige battle and considered the first big political test for Ms Raje after what is called ‘Lalitgate’ surfaced, it was actually a muted victory for the BJP that could only win 67 civic bodies against the claim of more than 100 out of 129.
