Hero Cycles founder Om Prakash Munjal passes away

He had been admitted on Monday after he complained of uneasiness
Chandigarh/New Delhi: Om Prakash Munjal, chairman emeritus of bicycle giant Hero Cycles, died after a heart attack in Ludhiana on Thursday morning. He was 86. Family sources said Mr Munjal breathed his last at 10.30 am at Hero Heart Institute of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, where he had been admitted on Monday after he complained of uneasiness. He suffered a brain stroke the next day and was in a critical condition ever since. The cremation will take place on Friday in Ludhiana.
Mr Munjal had only last month ceded chairmanship of Hero motors group and retired from active role in the business. His son Pankaj Munjal succeeded him as the CMD of the Group. Mr Munjal along with his three brothers including elder brother Brijmohan Lall Munjal (owns Hero MotoCorp, which is in motorcycle business) started a bicycle spare parts business in Amritsar in 1944. They moved their base to Ludhiana and set up India’s first bicycle manufacturing unit in 1956. Punjab CM Prakash Singh Badal expressed grief over Mr Munjal’s death.
