Banter set to a beat

Singers Suchi and Ranjith collaborate for a new music video
They are both renowned industry regulars; singers who have created a niche for themselves with their talent and determination. Over the course of their respective careers, they’ve garnered acclaim for their live performances along the way. Yet it’s taken these two a while — four years of jamming sessions, according to them — to be struck by enough inspiration to work on an independent single together ... but it has been well worth the wait!
No Time For Love, the single and music video by Suchitra and Ranjith, aired on MTV Indies exclusively to terrific response. With BBC London hosting a radio premiere of the song as well this week — the duo, who are good friends, are naturally upbeat.
Describing it as a song about our times set to a bluesy tune with European flourishes, Ranjith says that the inspiration is from their lives. “We see that’s the case in most independent song writing; the artists mainly talk about their emotions and feeling. That’s also a huge change from our otherwise script-based film songs.”
Suchi adds, “Well, the lyrics from this song literally flowed from the kind of people we are. I am a slightly panicky person. I’m fastidious, punctual, polite and mildly sarcastic by nature. Ranjith is laid back, easy going and I’d actually say a bit lackadaisical. Even when we jammed the tune out, it felt like a banter. Like a conversation between two people. The words ‘kadhalika neram illea’ popped into my head and fitted right into meter. That actually set the theme for the song and then someone suggested translating this song into other languages, and that felt so alien to me! The song came to me in Tamil-— almost as if the language was a conduit to express the entire idea.”
With a youthful and jaunty vibe, it almost plays like a witty banter between the two — and the singers admit it was just the kind they personally love listening to these days. “We composed this song a year ago, and we were all set to finish and release it then. But our man got super busy, and since he was arranging and producing the song, it had to take a back seat for a while. I wrote the lyrics, while an ensemble of wonderful musicians also worked on the song — David Joseph on drums, Aalaap Raju on bass and Keba Jeremiah on guitar,” Suchi quips.
Both of them also strongly believe that playback is not the be-all and end-all of a musician’s life, and Ranjith, who released a single, a while back, explains that the time felt right to put their chips on independent music now, “I have always enjoyed experimenting with music and have been fiddling around in my little home studio for a while now. We aren’t expecting anything, and are doing this just for the love of it.”
Suchi was new to the jungle, but it wasn’t difficult at all, “Our friends in the industry have been extra supportive. We intend making a lot more music together, as well as solo artists. Avial’s songwriter/guitarist, now composing for movies too — Rex Vijayan is producing my next song, and it is almost done,” she shares.
Audiences have also been piqued by the ‘Bad Girl’ version of the song — and Suchi, who has also recently lent her voice to a number in the upcoming film Valladesam, says, “So, if you watch the video, you’ll realise, I play ‘Ms. Prim-and-proper’ throughout, so the ‘Bad girl’ version was done to give this persona a nice little twist toward the end. And we do intend to release this version on YouTube!”
