Southern Peninsula to have deficit rains for a week: IMD

Hyderabad: The rainfall situation in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh is likely to remain unchanged and without much monsoon activity for at least one more week, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.

The Southern Peninsula will continue to have deficit rains during the next week. The overall rainfall activity in the south has remained low. From June 1, rainfall stands at 21 per cent less than normal.

According to IMD data, the sub-divisional rainfall in Telangana is currently 27 per cent less than normal. In Telangana, Medak is the worst-hit with minus-64 per cent rainfall. Nizamabad and Mahbubnagar received 57 per cent less rain than normal, followed by Hyderabad which has recorded 49 per cent deficit.

With hardly any monsoon activity, the cumulative rainfall quantity has reduced from 12 per cent to eight per cent in the last one week in coastal Andhra Pradesh. Nellore, Prakasam and Srikakulam are in the deficit rainfall districts list of the region.

Rainfall activity is likely to increase over eastern and central India from August 10 onwards. The western Himalayan region will receive fairly widespread rainfall during the next five days.

Moderate to heavy rain or thundershowers will occur over a few places in Telangana and coastal AP for the next two days which will again be followed by an isolated phase for the rest of the week, according to IMD inference.
