Salem: Thousands bid adieu to Sasi Perumal

High drama prevailed after the body of Sasi Perumal reached Salem at around 9:30 am
Salem: Amid high drama, after seven long days, the body of Gandhian and anti-liquor crusader Sasi Perumal, who died during a protest demanding closure of Tasmac shop, was brought to Salem and cremated at his native village of Illampilla on Friday.
A host of opposition leaders including DMK leader MK Stalin, MDMK chief Vaiko, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan, Congress leaders Kumari Anandan E.V.K.S. Elangovan and MLA Vijayadarani, CPI(M) state general secretary G.Ramakrishnan and PMK leader G.K. Mani took part in the funeral and paid their last respects.
In an indication of the groundswell of support for the cause of prohibition in Tamil Nadu, thousands of people, besides numerous politicians gathered at the house of the activist and paid their last respects.
High drama prevailed after the body of Gandhian activist Sasi Perumal reached Salem at around 9:30 am. Then the police wanted his body to be taken through Kondalampatty bypass and denied permission to go through Salem city.
This escalated tension, as MDMK chief Vaiko broke into an argument with police. He told police that they would not take his body if not allowed to go through Salem city. Following this, city police commissioner A. Amalraj granted permission to take the body of Gandhian activist through Salem city.
Amid heavy police presence, the body was then taken through Periyar bridge, four road, new bus stand, five road, AVR Roundtana and reached Mettukadu village at around 12:10 pm. Public stood all along the way and paid homage to the activist. Thereafter, the body of Sasi Perumal was cremated in his own land at around 5:30 pm.
