Chennai: Pace bowling allrounder Wayne Parnell couldn’t have got a better opportunity to stake his claim in the Proteas’ team ahead of South Africa’s tour to India in October. The left-arm seamer is here as part of the South Africa ‘A’ squad for the tri-series one-dayers involving the hosts and Australia ‘A’.
The 26-year-old last played an ODI against India during the 2015 World Cup and was dropped from the playing XI in the recently concluded ODI series against Bangladesh. Parnell said: “It is definitely an important series for me. Hopefully when the team does well, individuals will also do well.”
Despite featuring in four Tests, 46 ODIs and 35 T20s for South Africa, Parnell has never been a regular due to the presence of the potent pace troika — Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander.
“I feel I have not had a consistent run with the team. I believe I have done reasonably well whenever I got an opportunity over the last few years. Having come here I hope I will get a decent amount of game time,” he said.
Parnell, who was part of Pune Warriors and Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, mentioned even “warming the bench” in IPL would help one evolve as a player and understand how to bowl better in these conditions.
“When you are on the field, you consult with the captain, who in most cases is an Indian, and you will have a couple of Indian internationals fielding at mid-off or mid-on and you just feed off them.
“You will have top former Indian players with experience in the coaching staff alongside local players off the field. Sometimes you will be able to see certain things differently that you may not see while playing,” said Parnell.
