Tirupati: Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) is revamping the Telugu Ganga drinking water supply from Kailasagiri to Tirupati with an outlay of Rs 20 crore. With the completion of these works, the temple town would have sufficient water to meet the daily needs of the public as well as cater to the visiting pilgrims. The works would arrest wastage of water along the pipeline, a major reason for water shortage in Tirupati.
The municipal officials have already called for tenders and the works would start within few days. The development works include arresting of leakages along pipeline from Kailasagiri to Tirupati, laying of new pipelines in some places if required and construction of storage tanks in the town to overcome problems hampering daily supply of water for domestic purposes.
The works would involve installing surge protection system in the pipelines while supplying water with high pressure so that the entire amount of water drawn from reservoir for the town doesn't seep through the pipes. Pressure gauge instruments would be fixed to calculate the pressure in the pipeline to avoid frequent bursts, blodder vessels for controlling the pressure generated in the pipeline.
Municipal commissioner V. Vinay Chand said the pipes transmitting Telugu Ganga water from Kailasagiri near Srikalahasti to Tirupati are rusted resulting in frequent leakages as those were laid 18 years ago.
"MCT has allotted Rs 20 crore for the works, tenders have been called and surge protection system would be placed in the pipeline to avoid burst of pipeline," he said.
"Sometime water takes reverse direction with heavy force and pressure in the pipeline when power is suddenly cut off leading to sudden bursts of old pipes and all these problems would be solved with surge protection system and wastage of water would be arrested," he explained.
This project would be completed soon and nearly 18 water storage overhead tanks would come out in this budget, he stated. "With another Rs 20 crore budget, water storage tanks also will be constructed in M.R. Palli area where no water storage system is available and pipelines would be laid in areas where pipeline connectivity is not available and this development would take place as the city has been burgeoning towards southern side," Mr Vinay Chand said.
