Watch: Is stress making you bloated?

Watch how the brain affects the gut

Are you dreaming of washboard abs but struggling with bloating issues? Science says that all that stress in your brain is making things awry in your gut. This means that even though digestive problems can be triggered by a variety of reasons like fluctuating hormones or eating reheated food but the biggest factor of all could be just plain old stress.

With irritable bowel syndrome affecting one in every seven people, bloating is something that simply cannot be ignored. Why a stress-free mind and a healthy gut could just be the passport to a fitter you, according to Dr Helene Savignac, Brain Research Manager at Clasado Research Services. As quoted in the Daily Mail, She goes on to add that, “The bacteria that reside in the gut appear to play an important role and are able to communicate with the central nervous system - notably through neural, endocrine (hormonal) and immune pathways. In fact, reports mention that as much as 60-70 per cent of the immune system is based in the gut.”

This begs the question of what exactly makes a ‘good gut’ and more importantly how to maintain one? The answer is simple: just look after the ‘good’ bacteria. This will make it easier for your body to digest your food, absorb nutrients and fight harmful bacteria. Including special foods called prebiotics will help in sustaining these types of bacteria in your gut. Dr Savignac suggests, “Asparagus, leeks, garlic, Jerusalem artichoke, chicory root, banana wheat, you can also try prebiotic supplements such as Bimuno which can be added to food or a hot drink.”

Apart from your diet, learning how to manage mental and emotional stress is key to maintaining a healthy digestive system. This can be done in several ways such as regularly practising meditation, engaging in daily physical exercises and getting a good night’s sleep.
