Vijayawada: Vendors see flip side of road widening

Extension works to be taken up on several city roads are likely to reduce the flow of traffic
Vijayawada: As part of the road widening works being taken up in view of Krishna Pushkaralu, municipal officials have initially selected 18 major roads including MG Road in the city.
The extension works to be taken up on several city roads are likely to reduce the flow of traffic. However, a flip side to the extension works is the parking problems faced by the citizens. It may be noted that the roads, which are getting widened, host commercial establishments like marriage halls and shopping complexes. These complexes need parking spaces and until now, in the absence of space being provided by the establishments, road margins helped motorists park their vehicles.
Hundreds of vendors on these roads also worry over the widening as they would be forced to vacate the area and lose livelihood. Vendors in Gurunanak Nagar and other roads in I-Town will be most affected by the widening process.
“Due to road widening, the margins would be cut leaving behind no space to park vehicles at least for a short time. This may become a major problem in future,” said S. Moses, a resident of Barathi Nagar. Same is the case with MG Road where parking is a major problem.
Meanwhile, on Christu Rajpuram Road, where on one side of the road stands a hill, hundreds of vehicles are parked on roadsides, which would not be possible once the road is extended and divided with a median.
Though the traffic and VMC's town planning officials proposed increasing the numbers of parking lots, the project never took off. Even VMC's initiative to organise a parking system on Eluru road through paid parking did not yield any result.
