Stars who I introduced failed to be grateful: Kalaignanam

He expressed his unhappiness about the stars he introduced in Tamil cinema
Many eyebrows were raised at the promo of ARJ Velu’s directorial Eppo Solla Porey, when ace writer and producer Kalaignanam, expressed his unhappiness about the stars he introduced in Tamil cinema. “I introduced several actors including Jayachithra, Swapna and Madhavi, and made Kamal and Rajini heroes. As a producer, I took a lot of risk and made films with newcomers in those days. But they failed to be grateful. I am still searching for one person who has gratitude,” he said.
Kalaignanam recalled how Kamal refused to come in front of the camera after reaching his teens. “I was making the Kuratthi Magan where the director was looking out for a boy for a crucial role. I met Kamal when he was 18 years and was assisting Thang-appan dance master in my film Veguli Pen. He was fair and handsome and I felt I could rope him for Kuratthi…. But when I approached him, he was apprehensive of whether people would accept him as a hero after seeing him as a child artiste. I forced him and brought on board and you all know the rest.”
Similarly, for his film Bhairavi, Kalaignanam wanted Rajinikanth who was still acting as a villain until then, as the protagonist. But yet another biggie, Devar who agreed to financially support Bhairavi, withdrew when he learnt that Rajini was the hero. But Kalaignanam put his foot down and Bhairavi was Rajinikanth’s first movie as a solo hero in Tamil cinema. Later, we all know he went on to become the ‘superstar’.
