Poor logistics holds up Osmania General Hospital shifting

The orders for shifting out of the old hospital building have been issued

Hyderabad: No patients from Osmania General Hospital were shifted on Thursday as the logistics in terms of manpower, equipment and transportation facilities are still being worked out.

Meanwhile, doctors and paramedical staff at Sultan Bazaar Government Maternity Hospital raised a hue and cry over shifting to Petlaburj.

Director of health and medical education, Dr M. Ramani said, “The orders for shifting out of the old hospital building have been issued. But it is going to be done in a planned and phased manner. There are some who are upset and we are discussing the problems with them. The shifting will be slow as the recipient hospital at King Koti must not feel the burden and there must be enough space to ensure that the patients are comfortable.”

While the OGH doctors claim that there is a lot of confusion, shifting is a reality they are trying to cope with as professors, assistant professors, junior doctors and nurses are being distributed between the existing and the proposed hospital.

A senior OGH doctor explained, “We require ambulances and extra manpower to ensure that the equipment and also the laboratories are shifted properly. It requires a lot of work but the manpower is limited and so is the time which has to be divided between existing and new patients.”

After the first 24 patients were shifted, the response of the existing staff at the OGH and in other hospitals is also being studied.

A senior government officer said, “It’s a huge hospital and it will take time to accept that it is being moved. Hence, after the initial euphoria, a slow and steady approach is being adopted.”
