Vijayawada: There have been many hints by the Vijayawada municipal commissioner on losing the tag of ‘Smart city’ for Vijayawada. To soothe the ruffled feathers, in a recent conference with officials and people’s representatives, corporation officials were seen preparing themselves for the Amrut scheme, to gain the lost tag.
As part of the preparations, the commissioner and mayor decided to seek the help of corporators and citizens to form a Citizen Consultation Programme. Citizen Consultation Programme, which is the brainchild of civic commissioner G. Veerapandian, will get opinions from the citizens in their locality. Officials and all corporators are being directed to inspect thoroughly the prevailing problems in the 59 divisions including water supply, sanitation, sewage, storm water management, roads, greenery and bus facilities to all remote areas.
“Amrut scheme would support the city with Rs 500 crore in the span of five years. With this scheme, problems of water, sanitation, sewage storm water management, roads, greenery and bus facilities will be improved within three methods as suggested by the Centre,” said Mr Veerapandian.
“Under these three methods - retrofitting, redevelopment and green field, Amrut will work in taking the city to the next level,” he added. Due to the lackadaisical attitude of officials in administration the city lost the opportunity of becoming a smart city. Residents are upset and voicing their displeasure.
“We hoped that enhanced infrastructure and civic amenities will give the smart city tag to the city. Our hopes are shattered.” “However, Amrut will compensate for it,” said P.S. Swathi a resident of Patamata.
