Sakambari avatar draws crowd to Durga temple

3-day-long festival for good harvest begins
VIJAYAWADA: Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam atop Indrakeeladri was decked up for the three-day-long Sakambari Utsavalu on Wednesday. The temple authorities have made elaborate arrangements in transforming the presiding deity Goddess Kanaka Durga into Sakambari avatar.
Devotees started rushing for the temple to see the Goddess decorated with vegetables and fruits since early hours of Wednesday, first day of the festival.
Speaking on the occasion, chief priest Vishnubotla Shiva Prasad Sharma said, “The three-day festival has its prominence in history. The Goddess, in Sakambari avatar, is appeased by farmers when there is dearth of water for irrigation.” The festival is celebrated to appease the Goddess for good rains, bountiful harvest and copious yields of vegetables, said Mr Sharma, a priest.
Chandi parayana, chandi homam, santi poushtika homam would be performed for well-being of people, added the priest.
Meanwhile, temple executive officer Ch Narsinga Rao said the festival started on a good note even as a heavy rush was witnessed on the wee hours of Wednesday. “We have been supplying water and special kadambam prasadam to all pilgrims,” he added.
Speaking about the donations made to the temple, Mr Rao said, “The temple has received 19 tonnes of vegetables as donations from devotees and traders. The donors may contact B.V. Reddy on 9000030477, K. Vijay Kumar on 9849656558 or G. Satish Kumar on 9440229594.
