Dr Kalam cherished Tamil poems, says pontiff

Swamy found that Dr Kalam continued to be humble, knowledgeable and attentive
Chennai: Former President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was not only versatile in science but also firmly grounded in religion. He transcended religion and his love for Tamil was so profound that it would leave anyone astonished, said Sri Bharadwaj Swamy, pontiff of Sri Yohamaya Bhuvaneshwari Peetam, Ambattur.
Sharing his exclusive and cherished association with the missile man since Dr Kalam’s stint at Isro, Sri Bharadwaj Swamy said the former President had developed an instant liking for him.
Four days before he took charge as President of India, Dr Kalam had asked Swamy to recite Tamil devotional couplets.
“I was taken aback when he looked at me and said, ‘Swamy you have mastered over 7,000 Tamil devotional hymns can you recite a few now. Though it was something I didn’t expect, I quoted Avvaiyar’s songs and few other songs and he was delighted,” Sri Bharadwaj said.
Immediately, Dr Kalam hugged the Swamy and asked him to recite a few more songs. “Such was his love for Tamil language and religion. He respected Sadhus and yogis. As I was ready to leave, he did not hesitate to open my car’s door and said ‘Swamy meet me again’,” the pontiff recalled.
Later during his Delhi visit, the Swamy found that Dr Kalam continued to be humble, knowledgeable and attentive.
During his visit, the Swamy sought to know from the then President if he had visited the renowned Sri Vaishno Devi, Dr Kalam had replied that he had darshan of Vaishno amman.
