Chennai: Couple held for defrauding bank

The couple prepared bogus documents of a government land in Guindy
Chennai: Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths on Wednesday arrested a couple for defrauding a private sector bank to the tune of Rs 70 lakh by availing loans providing fake documents.
The couple prepared bogus documents of a government land in Guindy and provided them as surety to avail a loan worth Rs 70 lakh, police said.
The anti bank fraud team of the CCB arrested the couple, H. Isacc Ponsingh (55) and I. Hilda (52) based on a complaint of a bank representative, D. Inbamani.
Investigations revealed that the couple availed loan from the bank in 2010 when they planned to buy a departmental store in Royapettah, which came up for sale. They prepared bogus documents of a government land measuring 2,040 square feet worth over Rs 1 crore and passed them off claiming to be theirs.
“The bank officials came to know of the fraud only when they decided to put the land for auction after the couple failed o pay
the interests for their loans,” an investigating officer said.
A native of Tuticorin district, Isacc, a B.Com graduate, was working as a manager at a transport firm in Wall tax road before he bought the departmental store, police said. The couple were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody. “Further investigations are on to ascertain if anyone else is involved in the fraud,” a CCB official said.
