Municipal workers across Andhra Pradesh gave a call for an indefinite strike on July 10

Visakhapatnam: Sanitary workers of Visakhapatnam, affiliated to different trade unions, withdrew their indefinite strike following the state government’s decision to give them a hike on Saturday. They will report to work from Sunday.
In a round of talks held with ministers P. Narayana, Yanamala Ramakrishnudu and K. Atchhennaidu in Rajahmundry, the state government and the unions came to a consensus, giving the much needed relief to Vizagites from the rotting streets and accumulated garbage in the 16-day strike.
Mr M. Ananda Rao, a union leader who attended the meeting, said, “From tomorrow onwards, we are going to launch a special drive to clean the heaps of garbage piled across the city. But it may take a week to bring the cleanliness of the city back to normal.”
The government has agreed to increase the salaries of municipal workers from Rs 8,300 to Rs 11,000 and to consider the strike period as leave. About 5,000 municipal workers in the city will benefit from this decision.
The government has also agreed to pay the municipal workers’ salaries through 010 account and regularise the NMRs, added Ananda Rao.
