Jayalalithaa orders release of Mettur water

Adiperukku, is festival where farmers welcome the fresh water in a river

Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Saturday ordered the release of water from Mettur in connection with Aadiperuku festival celebrated along the banks of Cauvery. A statement from the secretariat read that the Chief Minister has ordered to increase the quantum of water released from Mettur dam, so that farmers and public joyfully celebrate Aadiperukku’ festival on August 3.

Ms Jayalalithaa said she had received requests from public seeking release of water from Mettur dam. “After ascertaining the present storage level and the inflow, I have directed increasing the water release from 2,000 cusecs to 4,000 cusecs from July 27 to August 3 for the public to celebrate Aadiperukku,” she said in her statement.

Adiperukku, is festival where farmers welcome the fresh water in a river. The festival endemic to Tamil nadu is observed for all perennial river basins and major reservoirs. The farmers in Delta and Cauvery basin usually celebrate the water rising levels marking the onset of monsoon.
