Thomas Isaac warns League on communalism

He said when the League-led ministry created new local bodies with an aim to derive narrow political gains

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former finance minister Thomas Isaac has justified his attack against Muslim League in connection with the ward delimitation exercise.

He said when the League-led ministry created new local bodies with an aim to derive narrow political gains, these naturally get dominated by one particular community.

However, the Muslim League has stoop to the level of closing its eyes to the emotional repercussions that such decisions could create among other communities, he said.

Mr Isaac said it was strange that the League was trying to attribute BJP’s decision to go for hard Hindutva line to his statement and CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran’s remarks.

He said the Muslim League's stand seems to be: “Who cares if there is majority communalism and its consolidation in the state; we just need to ensure victory in maximum constituencies and wards.”

“We are opposing the League's communalism only from a the secular point of view and not because of any other communal or sectarian agenda,” Mr Isaac said.

“It would do good if the Muslim League understood that majority of the people endorsed Left’s views on communalism,” the CPM leader added.

Mr Isaac said the Muslim League leadership should realise that 193 CPM workers had been killed by the RSS in Kerala over the past four decades.

“They should spare a thought as to why these CPM workers were becoming the target of RSS in Kerala and across the country, “ he said.

“Secular politics is central to our national political perspective and that’s why, at one point, we even supported our main enemy, Congress, to keep the BJP out of power,” he added.
