Hyderabad Metro removes 2,114 streetlights

Motorists now have to find their way using their vehicle lights
Hyderabad: Around 2,114 central median lights (two armed streetlights) were removed to make way for the Hyderabad Metro. Since then, as streetlights are installed on the extreme left and right sides of roads, the illumination has decreased causing hardships to commuters, especially during heavy rains.
Motorists now have to find their way using their vehicle lights. During construction of the viaduct Metro Rail had installed huge halogen lights which helped to some extent but after completion of the duct the lights have been removed.
There is no proper lighting on the main carriageway throughout the Metro route. N.V.S. Reddy of the Hyderabad Metro Rail said, “For viaduct construction around 2,114 central median two armed street lights were removed and 1,032 have been installed on the left and right side of the roads. Around 50 per cent of the streetlight installation job is done and the remaining will be taken up soon. Rs 10.65 crore was allocated for street lighting. Of this Rs 5 crore has been spent. HMR will conduct an inspection to check lighting on main roads.”
The GHMC has set a proposal to replace existing street lights with 4,000 energy saving LED lamps on 20 major roads. The selected roads are in the central and southern zones of the city.
