Former DMK mayor, cadres protest for water

A large gathering of residents from South Chennai participated in the protest
Chennai: Former Chennai Mayor M. Subramaniam along with residents and DMK cadres staged a demonstration in front of the Saidapet metro water office on Friday protesting against the erratic supply of drinking water in Chennai. Noting that water supply was not sufficient even to meet the day-to-day activities, he said the situation was getting worse day-by-day. Water was being supplied only once in four days and even that was contaminated.
A large gathering of residents from South Chennai participated in the protest. Police attempted to pacify the demonstrators. The participants were arrested and released in the evening.
On the water shortage in the city, the DMK president M. Karunanidhi said “Media reports say Chennai is suffering from poor water supply and there is lack of enough water supply even in the peripheral areas.”
Noting that the government should clarify the steps taken to address the issue, he said “Whenever the city experienced erratic supply of water during the DMK regime, we took adequate steps to redress the problem immediately and assured continuous supply”.
