Delhi Police chief calls Arvind Kejriwal's ad 'misleading'

Bassi said there are no 'shortcomings' in the system as alleged in the advertisement

New Delhi: Delhi Police chief B S Bassi on Thursday objected to AAP government's advertisement where Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has questioned the functioning of the force, calling it "misleading". The Delhi Police Commissioner said the advertisement, which is being aired on TV and radio, should not have been given as it is only creating "misconception".

"I have seen the advertisement. I would like to say Delhi Police is committed to the security of women," Bassi said.

He said there are no "shortcomings" in the system as alleged in the advertisement and the Chief Minister should specify what all he wanted to "rectify" as well as his "action plan".

In the advertisement, Kejriwal refers to the recent brutal murder of 19-year-old-girl and appeals to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps to improve Delhi's "deteriorating" law and order situation or hand over police to the city government.

Bassi said that several important steps have been taken for security of women in the city. "If any incident is reported and if any cognisable offence is made out, FIR is immediately registered and investigation is carried out expeditiously to catch the culprit. All the evidence are presented before the court so that culprit could be punished," he said.

In the advertisement, Kejriwal also said, "I have a small, humble request. Either you (PM) spare at least one hour a week to Delhi's law and order situation, fix accountability for the Delhi Police and interact with the people of Delhi, or give us the control of Delhi Police. With the help of people, we will improve functioning of Delhi Police."

Reacting to it, Bassi said, "It is quite easy to say that the system has shortcomings but I need to know specifically what these shortcomings are and what is the action plan (to rectify them)."

Disapproving of the advertisement which also terms Delhi Police as "unrestrained", Bassi said, "In my opinion such type of advertisement is misleading and it should not have been given. It is not in the interest of the people and it is not educating them.

"It is only creating misconception which is not a good thing."
