Telangana universities lack discipline: KCR

Discussions on the new Universities Act have been going on for several months now
Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao told top ministers and officials who met him at the camp office that varsities in the state were functioning as per their own whims and fancies and they needed to streamlined. He also felt that the Governor as ex-officio chancellor wouldn’t be able to do justice to all universities and suggested that each varsity should have its own chancellor who could be useful to the institution.
“The state should have the power to appoint chancellors,” he said. As per the Universities Act, the Governor is the ex-officio chancellor of all state universities. “Though the government is supporting the universities financially, there are irregularities. Several university properties are in dire straits and some have been taken away by land sharks,” Mr Srihari said. It, however, remains to be seen if the proposal will cut ice with the UGC whose regulations mandate the Gove-rnor to be the chancellor.
Mr Srihari also said that a new Universities Act would be prepared in a day or two and sent to the Chief Minister for final approval.
The CM also asked Mr Rajiv Sharma to constitute search committees for selecting vice-chancellors for universities. All state universities in TS are currently being run by IAS officials as in-charge V-Cs.
Discussions on the new Universities Act have been going on for several months now.
As per a release sent by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Mr Rao also wanted medical education to be brought under the purview of the Education Ministry and not the Health Ministry as is the case at present. However, later in the night, the CMO sent a message that this part was to be ignored.
