Italian marines case: Supreme Court extends Latorre's stay in Italy by six months

SC has issued a notice to the govt on a plea by Italy seeking international arbitration

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has allowed an Italian marine to stay in his country for another six months on medical leave before he and a fellow marine face trial in New Delhi for fatally shooting two Indian fishermen in 2012.

The court on Monday extended Massimiliano Latorre's stay in Italy beyond July 15 as he developed complications following heart surgery in January.

The Supreme Court sought the government's response by August 26 to Italy's decision to enter into international arbitration with India in the case.

Italy says the decision followed three years of unsuccessful negotiations with India and the "impossibility of arriving at a solution."

Italy says the shooting occurred in international waters and the case should be heard in an Italian court.
