Open Veeranam for cultivation of kuruvai: Stalin

DMK Treasurer said the water release would benefit 60,000 acres of land

Chennai: DMK treasurer M. K. Stalin on Thursday ‘demanded’ the state government to immediately release water from Veeranam lake for kuruvai cultivation in Cuddalore district. In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Stalin said the delay has affected the district farmers negatively and water release would benefit 60,000 acres of land.

Referring to the delay in opening the sluices of Mettur dam for kuruvai cultivation and an alleged suicide of a farmer in Tiruvarur, Stalin accused the AIADMK regime of having “no concern for farmers” across the state. He also appealed to the state to compensate the farmers families who committed suicide with at least Rs 5 lakh each and waive their loans as done during previous DMK regime.

Earlier in the day, DMK president M. Karunanidhi launched the revamped version of the party. The new look website, which did not open despite repeated attempts on the inaugural day, the party claims, will facilitate effortless public participation, online membership. The IT cell has also attempted to make the website more interactive by creating facilities for sending feedback and posing queries. “This new website will ensure increased interaction with cadre and citizens alike,” a party release said.
