Bengaluru: Follow traffic rules and get rewarded

The Traffic Police have selected eight offences, wherein the violators would face suspension of license at the very first instance

Bengaluru: The next time you receive a post from the Traffic Police, don’t be worried about the signals you jumped that month. It may be a commendation note, from the traffic police for orderly behaviour while commuting.

Be it pedestrian, two-wheeler rider, car owner or auto-rickshaw driver, the police will hand pick the good drivers and will submit them commendations by post.

The traffic police have partnered with an NGO – Positive Stroke – which has been actively working with commuters in Bengaluru on traffic issues. The traffic police feel that it’s important to identify the good drivers and appreciate their efforts in helping the traffic police and fellow commuters have a decent day on the busy city roads.

“If the majority of motorists adhere to the rules, several traffic snarls will drastically reduce. Few people obey traffic rules, so we want to identify good drivers and encourage them,” said Mr. M A Saleem, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

But the commendation letters do not come easy. A person chosen for appreciation will have the vehicle registration number checked for past offences. Only “clean” drivers will get the commendation letter which they can then flaunt on their cars and two-wheelers. In the month of May, the police and members from Positive Stroke have picked about 20 good drivers in the city who will soon receive commendation letters.

Anusha Jayshankar, Founder of Positive Stroke, said that the campaign of recognising good drivers is being organised for the last one year, but this is the first time the drivers will receive the letters at their homes.

“We have conducted similar programmes at junctions where we have given recommendation letters to drivers on the spot. But now we will be monitoring commuters through the junction camera at the traffic management centre. During the last campaign, in the month of May we invited a group of school children to watch the traffic and select good drivers. The same list was later verified by the traffic police and the commendation letters were sent,” she said.
