New body for professional boxing in India is launched

IBC will sanction professional matches and award national championship titles

New Delhi: Professional boxing took baby steps in India with the launch of its first national governing body —the Indian Boxing Council here on Wednesday.

The IBC will sanction professional matches and award national and subordinate championship titles, and also promises lucrative financial deals for pugilists wanting to take the plunge after exhausting their amateur options, the organisers said.

The development comes just days after Olympic medallist Vijender Singh announced his decision to turn professional, a year prior to the 2016 Rio Games.

Former Indian Amateur Boxing Federation secretary general Brig. P.K. Muralidharan Raja, who conceptualised the body, was named IBC’s first president with Infinity Optimal Solutions being its first marketing arm.
