Teachers told to enrich exams with cultural values

Holistic development leading to human excellence should be the goal of education
COIMBATORE: Holistic development leading to human excellence should be the goal of education, said Dr B. K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, chairman of Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore at a faculty development programme on ‘man making education’ organised at Kongunadu Arts and Science college.
Emphasising the need for man-mending education, he said, “There is no problem in modern India that cannot be tackled by education. One should bring about an attitudinal change in the youth of the nation who are influenced by materialism pervading in society. The meaningless routine of exams and placement should be enriched by cultural values,” he insisted.
He further stressed on three C’s — Competence, communication and commitment. He urged the teaching faculty to train students to convert challenges into opportunities and to transcend their limited thinking. Career alone should never be the final goal.
Around 500 faculty members from various institutions participated in the programme. The secretary and director of the college, C. A. Vasuki said, “Due to the deterioration of familial support, students depend more on teachers for emotional support. Teachers are role models and immense responsibility is vested with them.”
