Army sailors continue to dominate

The Toppers nationals will kick off from Tuesday
Hyderabad: The Army trio of P.P. Mutthurajan, Narendra Singh Rajput and Subham Patel continued to dominate the proceedings on the second day of the CISM World Military Games trials as a part of the Deloitte Monsoon Regatta at the Hussainsagar lake in Hyderabad on Monday.
The Army team, led by 470 Class National Champion Mutthurajan, showed nerves of steel as they came from behind to win all the six races held at the Yacht Club of Hyderabad.
In the fifth race, Navy commander Atool Sinha led until the downwind mark with a slender lead. As the winds grew strong Atool lost control of his boat and finished more than two minutes behind Mutthurajan’s team.
Mutthurajan and Co. got off to a slow start in the sixth race but made up for it with some spectacular tactics and fine boat handling to win the race. Meanwhile, top seeds Ayaz Sheikh and Sandeep Jain finished the day placed second with eight points from six races.
Earlier, the morning races were called off as the winds exceeded 25 knots, which made it difficult for racing. But the Optimist class sailors made the most of the opportunity as they practiced for the upcoming Optimist championship. The Toppers nationals will kick off from Tuesday.
