More than 220 people in village affected
Vijayawada: The rising cases of viral fever and one death has focused once again on the menace of water contamination in Kotha Majeru village of Challapalle Mandal. Officials, who haven’t responded from the past 20 days, have finally realised the gravity of the situation.
According to medical and health officials of the district, more than 220 people in the village were reported positive in the viral attack and given immediate medical aid to bring the situation under control.
“We are giving medicines and injecting IV fluids for the seriously sick to stabilise their condition,” said mandal health officer K. Ratnagiri. The water samples which were sent to the regional sample centre at the medical college in Vijayawada, confirmed that all the water sources in the village were contaminated with high proportions of pathogenic bacteria E. coli and Klebsiella, and also concluded that the water is unfit for drinking purposes. Till date, more than 500 people in the village have been in the grip of viral fever and many others are being tested and also sent to private hospitals in Vijayawada and Machilipatnam for better medical assistance.
On Monday, more than 300 villagers were tested at the health camp. However, the officials suggested villagers not to use water from suspected contaminated pond, or wells in the villages. Meanwhile, rural water supply department arranged water through 10 tankers and is being supplied from Sunday.
