Goals in place for Thiruvananthapuram’s mobility plan

Comprehensive plan mandatory for Central funding

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) has come up with a slew of short and long term measures to ensure a safe, secure, efficient and reliable transportation system for the 13 lakh population in Thiruvananthapuram district as part of the comprehensive mobility plan prepared on demand from the Kerala Rapid Transit Corporation Ltd (KRTCL) — the SPV formed for executing mass rapid transit systems in the state.

The comprehensive mobility plan, a necessary document for availing Central funds, is being prepared to plan and organise transport for the growing needs of the state capital especially the corporation area and eight adjoining panchayats.

NATPAC scientist (traffic and transportation division) S. Shaheem and vice-president of Ur-ban Mass Transport Company V. Seshadri presented the CMP plan to stakeholders.

As per the study undertaken by NATPAC, the average speed recorded in the city is 25 km per hour.

The CMP also stressed the need for augmenting KSRTC by buying more buses and for adopting non-motor transportation especially cycles.

The plan also cites the need for providing more infrastructure for pedestrians and brings in an alternate and reliable public transport system to force riders to migrate from private vehicles.
