CPI meetings from today

The party is of the opinion that the LDF should be expanded to take on the UDF and BJP

THIRUVANATHAPURAM: The Communist Party of India (CPI) leadership meetings are beginning here from Tuesday to review the political and organisational activities in the state especially in the light of Aruvikkara bypoll defeat.

The CPI executive will meet at M N Smarakam for two days followed by the two-day state council meeting.

The meeting will review the LDF’s performance in the recent bypoll and the factors that led to its defeat.

The rise of the BJP in certain pockets of the state would also come up for discussion at the meet, besides the preliminary deliberations on the strategy for the coming local bodies’ poll in October. The party is of the opinion that the LDF should be expanded to take on the UDF and BJP.

The meeting is taking place in the backdrop of a section of Congress leadership appealing to the CPI to cross over to the UDF.

The CPI leadership is also upset over the CPM decision to include its former district secretary P. Ramachandran Nair in the district committee.

He was suspended from the party in connection with the Bennett Abraham payment seat issue.
